Treatment By Hands-on Method - Tips for Reiki-1 Healers

Reiki treatment can be given anytime, anywhere; while traveling in a train, a bus, during sleep, during a walk or any place which you can think of. There are no restrictions as a matter of rule. There is actually nothing wrong or right while giving Reiki. In fact, there is hardly any thing which you can do wrong. Do it the way your intuition guides you. If the time available is too short, Reiki can still be given because some Reiki is better than no Reiki at all. If it is being done in emergency, just connect with Reiki energy and place your hands on the affected area. However, it is ideal to give a full body Reiki sessions in a nice and comfortable atmosphere so that the recipient can draw full benefit from it with a relaxed mind and enjoy it. If you are running your Reiki Clinic, have a proper treatment couch/table on which the recipient can lie down comfortably.

A Reiki practitioner must remember that a fractured limb should not be given Reiki treatment unless the bone has been set in its place, otherwise the wound may heal up with Reiki making resetting of the bone difficult. However, if the situation demands, you can use your power of intention to tell the Reiki energy not to reset the bone in an optimal manner but to assist in other aspects of the healing.

A point to remember is that Reiki is meant for healing, not for stage performance. A Reiki treatment session is not a magical show. Reiki practitioner should try to educate the people who ask for a stage performance and explain to them how Reiki works and how does the healing take place.

Each area of the body where the hands are placed for treatment is referred to as point or position. For a full body treatment by hands-on method at your Reiki clinic, following guidelines are offered. To use this information, you would need to know the hand positions. You may like to make modifications to suit your own requirement.

Before the Treatment

  1. Recall your intention for healing.
  2. Wash your hands before the treatment. Your cleanliness allows more energy to flow through you.
  3. Though it is not absolutely necessary, it is better that both healer and the recipient remove all jewelry, metallic items, especially watches. Small hooks in the undergarments may remain in place.
  4. Do not wear tight clothing during treatment sessions. Recipient should also preferably wear comfortable clothes.
  5. It is better to have a glass of water before the healing session, both for the healer and the recipient.
  6. Avoid wearing any perfume or scent during the treatment.
  7. Have the recipient lie on a clean treatment table/couch in comfortable surroundings, with eyes closed. Closing the eyes is not essential but it is better so that the recipient can relax to the maximum.
  8. On the healer’s part, closing the eyes or mental concentration during a healing session is not required. He/She just needs to place the hands with the intention of healing. If during the treatment session, minds of the healer and the recipient become busy elsewhere, it is quite normal. The Reiki will still flow and do what it needs to do. In fact it is better not to keep the minds fixed on the flow of the energy.
  9. You may sit in a chair while working on head positions.
  10. Agree on a signal with the recipient in advance, which you will give when treatment session is over. For example, you will lightly tap his/her shoulder when it is over.
  11. Ask the recipient to lie quietly and comfortably with relaxed mind. If necessary, take him/her to a light state of meditation.
  12. Some people feel very comfortable with music. If the recipient likes, you can play a light music at a low volume. However, avoid sad songs and sad music.
  13. Dim the lights in the room for a more soothing effect.

Starting the Treatment

  1. Connect with Reiki energy in your own way.
  2. Gently place hands on the first point. Be ware that you do not exert undue pressure making the recipient uncomfortable.

During the Treatment

  1. Recipient or the healer should not cross their limb during the session.
  2. Keep your hands on each hand position for 3 to 5 minutes. Area of trouble or points requiring special attention may be given longer time, as required.
  3. Most of the times, sensations in your hands will tell you when the point is saturated indicating that you should now shift to the next position.
  4. When changing hand positions, it is better to move one hand at a time so that there is no break in the flow of energy. Remember that “when hands are on, Reiki is on; when hands are off, Reiki is off”.
  5. The hands should always be lifted, not dragged from one position to another.
  6. If you miss any point/position, do not worry about it. Just continue and remember that Reiki energy will automatically reach where it is required.
  7. If recipient wants to move a leg or a hand due to any reason, he may do so but unnecessary and frequent movement should be avoided.
  8. If the recipient wants to say some thing, encourage him to do so but unnecessary gossip is not recommended.
  9. If the recipient falls asleep during the session, continue your treatment till the completion.
  10. Finish the session by giving an indication through the signal, which you had agreed on.
  11. If the recipient feels uncomfortable, you may terminate the session.
  12. Last but very important: Never violate privacy of recipient’s body, specially if she is a lady.

After the Treatment

  1. Thank Reiki energies and close the session.
  2. Let the recipient remain in position for a while. Do not ask him/her to get up quickly.
  3. Wash your hands because the last hand position was on the feet.
  4. It is better to have a glass of water after the healing session, both for the healer and the recipient.
