What is Stress and its Causes?
Stress has been defined by various persons as they understood it. For example:
- Stress can be defined as negative reaction to unwanted events, circumstances and happenings.
- It can also be defined as body’s automatic response to any physical or mental demand placed on it.
I define it as the physical and mental discomfort caused by a happening, circumstances or personal thought pattern. It can vary in intensity from too little and short lived to intense and prolonged or continued.
The modern busy, hectic and competitive life style has given the gift of stress to almost every living human being. Many persons apparently looking healthy and smart with impressive personalities are stressed inside. If you study their behavior and life style and if they ever speak their heart to you, you would know that most of them have very uncomfortable state of mind. They are seldom at peace; do not get sound and refreshing sleep, do not enjoy their meals like a normal happy person and so on. They have achieved material success but at the cost of their peace of mind; they have sold their happiness for worldly gains. They want to get rid of their stress but either do not know how to manage it or have no time to do that.
Causes of Stress
There are innumerable causes of mental stress varying from person to person. It is not possible to list all those. Some of the common causes of stress are:
- Difficult work environments
- Broken or strained relationships
- Difficult and/or disharmonized family life
- Bad financial state
- Trying to achieve bigger goals in shorter time
- Prolonged sickness
- General discontentment
- Worries about the future
This list can perhaps never be complete because everyone has his own peculiar environments. All of the above causes are not and cannot be applicable to everyone. The causes(s) will be different depending upon peculiar problems, thought pattern, life style, habits, desires, perception of life and all the other environments of the individual. Whatever be the cause, the stress shows up through certain symptoms. The causes may vary, yet, the stress can be managed. It requires the desire and some effort.
