There are two methods for giving Reiki treatment:

Hands-on Method (Level-1). It is a simple but extremely powerful process and is usually done with the recipient lying down on a treatment couch or table, fully clothed. If necessary, recipient can also be covered with a sheet of cloth or a blanket during cold weather. No equipment, rubbing, pressing, pulling or massage etc. is involved. The practitioner simply and gently places the hands on the recipient's head, front of the body, back, knees and feet etc. and channels the Reiki energy through these points. This enables the energy to flow right to the source of the problem and not just the manifesting symptoms. While focus is given to the body’s major organs, every cell of the body receives the energy and benefits from it. It can be specially applied to any part of the body which needs more attention, like the injured parts even through the bandages.

Distant Healing Method (Level-2). This method can be used by a practitioner who has been attuned for distant healing, that is Reiki Second Degree. In this method, no physical touch is involved. As the name indicates, Reiki energy can be sent to any distance. The recipient is not required to be physically present with the practitioner. At this level, the Reiki energy is not bound by time and space. It can be sent to the past and future.

This method become very handy in a situation where touching the recipient is not practicable due to any reason or to treat someone who does not like to be touched by hand. There are several common and special techniques to send distant healing.

Recommendation
While it is fine to receive Reiki treatment from a practitioner, you should consider learning Reiki yourself. This will enable you to treat yourself and others at home and thus save expenses and traveling time etc. This option is most suited to those who need treatment for a chronic problem. You may have a family member attuned who can give you regular treatment at home but it all depends on your free will whether you wish to learn or receive treatment only.
